Buying Guide: Reading Ratings the Smart Way
Keep these points in mind before you buy.
Look past the star average
Read recent reviews and look for comments on noise, smells and filter fit over months of use, not just first impressions.
Look for AHAM Verifide or ENERGY STAR
AHAM Verifide means an independent lab checked the CADR. ENERGY STAR models use less power, which matters when a purifier runs all day in allergy season.
Match CADR to room size
CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) shows how fast a purifier cleans. AHAM suggests a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area, so a 150 sq ft room needs about 100 CFM.
Count the filter cost
Check the price and life of the replacement filter before you buy. A cheap purifier with expensive filters can cost more over two years.
Read Reviews Smarter
Spot useful reviews:
- Sort by most recent.
- Look for months of use.
- Check filter complaints.
- Compare room sizes.
