What’s New in Dishwasher Detergent
Here is what has changed for the best dishwasher detergent 2026 formulas.
No pre-rinse is the new standard
Finish Quantum and Cascade Complete both promise no pre-rinse cleaning, even on food left for a day.
Shine and glass protection
Premium lines like Finish Ultimate Quantum Infinity Shine add glass care to prevent cloudiness.
Less plastic
Finish Powerball now comes in a plastic-free wrap, and tablets like Branch Basics skip film entirely.
Plant-based and plastic-free options
Brands like Seventh Generation, Dropps and Branch Basics skip phosphates, chlorine bleach or plastic film. They work well for everyday loads, though baked-on food may need a pre-scrub.
Hard water changes everything
Hard water leaves white film and spots. If you see cloudy glasses, add rinse aid or a citric-acid booster like Lemi Shine, or use a premium pod with built-in shine protection.
Switching Detergents? Do This First
Get the best from a new formula:
- Clean the filter before switching.
- Run one empty cleaning cycle.
- Use rinse aid in hard water.
- Give a new detergent a week before judging.
