How We Chose the Best Quality Air Purifier Filter
To choose the best quality air purifier filter, we compared popular HEPA, carbon, pre-filter and MERV 13 HVAC filters on Amazon by filter type, rated life, fit and owner feedback.
EPA says to match CADR to room size, use activated carbon for gases and choose at least MERV 13 for HVAC filters where the system allows; see the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Product details in this guide are based on manufacturer specifications and verified owner feedback. Read more on our How We Test page.
Buying Guide: What Quality Looks Like
Keep these points in mind before you buy.
Signs of a quality filter
Dense pleats, a real carbon layer rather than a thin dusting, a rigid frame and a gasket that seals.
Carbon needs mass
EPA says activated carbon filters can be effective for gases if there is a large amount of carbon; there is no widely used rating for gas removal, and CADR covers particles only.
Genuine or compatible
Match the exact model and filter part number. Some brands, like Levoit, say their filter-life indicators are built around genuine filters.
Quality Care Tips
Protect your investment:
- Keep the pre-filter clean.
- Store spares sealed and dry.
- Handle by the frame.
- Swap on schedule.
