How We Chose the Best Air Purifier Filter Carbon Filter
To choose the best air purifier filter carbon filter, we compared popular HEPA, carbon, pre-filter and MERV 13 HVAC filters on Amazon by filter type, rated life, fit and owner feedback.
EPA says to match CADR to room size, use activated carbon for gases and choose at least MERV 13 for HVAC filters where the system allows; see the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Product details in this guide are based on manufacturer specifications and verified owner feedback. Read more on our How We Test page.
Buying Guide: Choosing Carbon
Keep these points in mind before you buy.
Carbon needs mass
EPA says activated carbon filters can be effective for gases if there is a large amount of carbon; there is no widely used rating for gas removal, and CADR covers particles only.
Carbon wears out
Carbon fills up with the gases it adsorbs, so odors return; replace it on the maker’s schedule.
HEPA, carbon or pre-filter
HEPA layers catch fine particles, activated carbon targets gases and odors, and pre-filters catch hair and lint so the main filter lasts longer. EPA notes most filters target either particles or gases, so many purifiers use two.
Odor Control Tips
Fix smells at the source:
- Use the range hood.
- Air out after cooking.
- Keep trash sealed.
- Replace carbon on time.
